GAA: There were jubilant scenes in Crosskeys Saturday afternoon where Cornafean captured the reserve division three title. In a game that never lacked excitement or commitment the Reds never gave up until the bitter end. For the younger members of the team such as Niall Corcoran, Adrian Caffrey and Cian Geoghegan it should install a hunger to go on from this while, for Brian Doyle and Liam Young, it caps off a great career for Cornafean.

Ballyhaise started off well and it was not until the 13th minute that Pauric Tully popped up to score his first point for the Reds. Art McSeain was always a threat and converted a well taken free straight after this. The weather played its part also for both teams with constant rain throughout the match. Andrew Smith caught a ball from Ciaran Duignan to put over a well taken point to keep Cornafean in touch. At this stage Ballyhaise nearly killed off Cornafean with a goal. The score at this stage was 1-03 to 0-03 and Cornafean needed to lift their heads. Tommy Duffy was the man to answer the call with a goal that would have been deemed brilliant by anybody’s standards. Ballyhaise replied back and went into the interval 1-07 to 1-04 in the lead.

Cornafean started the second half with all the play and nothing to show for it. With the introduction of James Cullen, Killian Reilly and Wayne Johnston Cornafean threw all they could into the game. With some good fielding by Brian Doyle and Ciaran Duignan while Barry Doyle popped up all over the field they kept the pressure on. Ballyhaise scored their last point 10 minutes into the second half. This is a credit to the defence of Paul Brady, Eamon Reilly and Adrian Caffrey. It was left to the “Taz” man to draw the team’s level after 24 minutes. Next a ball passed to Adrian Caffrey which saw him run into a “cul de sac” only to put over Cornafean winning point started the jubilant scenes.

A word of thanks to all the panel of players who turned out throughout the year and also the management of Pauric Cosgrove and Oliver Gormley. Well done to all.
